Expo vs React Native CLI — Which Is Right in 2026?

Both Expo and React Native CLI let you build React Native apps. Expo wraps RN with a managed toolchain that handles builds, OTA updates, push notifications, and more — out of the box. React Native CLI gives you the bare framework with full control. Here's how to choose.

ExpovsReact Native CLI

Expo

Managed toolchain — build, deploy, and update without Xcode/Android Studio

Pros

  • Build apps without Xcode or Android Studio (EAS Build in the cloud)
  • OTA updates ship code changes without App Store review
  • Push notifications, deep linking, auth all built in
  • Vast library of pre-built modules (camera, BLE, sensors, etc.)
  • Excellent developer experience and documentation
  • Config Plugins let you customize native code declaratively

Cons

  • EAS Build/Submit/Update has paid tiers for higher usage
  • Some niche native libraries still need workarounds
  • Slightly larger app bundle than bare RN CLI

Best for

  • Almost every React Native project in 2026
  • MVPs and startups optimizing for speed
  • Teams without dedicated iOS/Android engineers
  • Apps that benefit from OTA updates

React Native CLI

Bare framework — full control, full responsibility

Pros

  • Full control over native iOS and Android code
  • No third-party tooling dependencies
  • Easier integration with proprietary native SDKs
  • Smaller default bundle size

Cons

  • Need Xcode and Android Studio installed and updated
  • Manage builds, signing, and certificates yourself
  • No built-in OTA updates
  • Push notifications, deep linking, auth all DIY
  • More boilerplate to set up common features

Best for

  • Apps that need very specific native SDKs Expo doesn't support
  • Large engineering teams with dedicated native experts
  • Brownfield integration into an existing native app
  • Highly customized build pipelines

Our Verdict

Expo for almost every project in 2026

The old reasons to choose React Native CLI over Expo evaporated in 2024-2025. Expo's dev builds and Config Plugins now let you use any native module, integrate any SDK, and customize the build process — while keeping EAS Build, EAS Update, and the managed toolchain. The only real reason to use bare RN CLI is brownfield integration into an existing native app. I default to Expo for every client project and have not regretted it once.

Choose Expo if...

Choose Expo if you want to ship faster, value OTA updates, don't want to babysit Xcode/Android Studio versions, or are building a new app from scratch.

Choose React Native CLI if...

Choose React Native CLI only if you're integrating React Native into an existing native app, or you have very specific native SDK requirements Expo can't accommodate.

Expo vs React Native CLI: FAQ

Can Expo apps use any native module?+
Yes. Expo's dev builds (formerly 'custom dev clients') let you use any React Native native module by creating a custom build that includes it. You're no longer locked to Expo's managed workflow's limited module set like you were in 2020.
Is Expo free?+
The Expo SDK itself is free. The hosted services (EAS Build, EAS Update, EAS Submit) have a generous free tier and paid plans for higher usage. Most early-stage apps stay on the free tier; production apps typically pay $19-99/month.
Do I need to eject from Expo?+
Almost never anymore. The old 'eject' workflow has been replaced by dev builds and Config Plugins, which give you full native customization without leaving Expo's toolchain. Apps that 'ejected' in 2019-2020 should consider migrating back.
Is Expo slower than bare React Native?+
No. Once the app is built, runtime performance is identical — both use the same React Native runtime. The differences are in tooling, not performance. Bundle size is marginally larger with Expo but negligible for most apps.
Can I use Expo for production apps?+
Yes. Companies like Coinbase, Discord (in parts), and thousands of production apps run on Expo. The framework is mature, battle-tested, and the default choice for new React Native projects in 2026.
